In a press conference today, following his visit to the Pope's funeral, Prince Charles has been discussing, amongst other things, his selection of a horse for Saturday.
"One has opted to follow one's gut instinct this year," he said, "In the past one had several side bets on this one after seeing it at a polo match, but after others have not been great successes, one is putting all one's eggs in one of one's baskets this time."
He has been known in the past for selecting popular favourites, but events of previous years have changed his mind. "One had previously opted for public favourites, especially under pressure from mater who claimed that it was ones duty as future King to agree with the proles." he said, in a moment of unusual honesty, "But after one that one chose crashed fatally under pursuit, one decided to opt for a different tack. One's previous selection was much better from the front than this year's, but one is hoping we can push up from the rear."
There was some question as to whether his horse of choice was actually eligible due to having previously been in similar events, but following a thorough review it was decided to be allowed, with certain caveats. Were it to come through saturday successfully it would not be able to claim the crown of victory outright.
His selection has been described by some, particularly The Queen, as a "rank outsider", and Charles' mother has decided not to participate in the event this year, an unusual move that has been seen by some as a snub of the whole proceedings.
Interestingly, public popularity for his selection has not risen since his option to choose it, with many laughing off the idea. "I wouldn't choose that one in a month of sundays" said one man, "it should have been put out to pasture years ago. It wouldn't raise the slightest flutter in me".
When the Prince was asked who he thought would win the Grand National on Saturday, he replied "Oh, one didn't realise the National was this weekend, one must remember to put on a bet."
